Independent photograph zine, depicting stereotypical death scenarios and scenes of the deceased. It invites readers to confront mortality with me.
“My mother's commitment to end-of-life care deeply influenced my exploration of existence. Accompanying her to nursing homes prompted profound reflections on mortality. Visiting a seven-floor nursing home, where the top floor housed the terminally ill, sparked introspection. I questioned if my fear stemmed from death or societal stigma stripping dignity from unproductive individuals. "The Ballad of Narayama" challenged norms equating worth with productivity. Practiced for millennia almost everywhere in the world, this custom of actively disposing of old 'useless' people or passively putting oneself to death is increasingly being revived today. Senicide is a nameless and silent scandal in our modern, enlightened society. The term "寄死窑" is translated into English as "Dying Cave" or "Death Cave." It refers to caves or small excavations in cliffs or bushes that are large enough to accommodate one person and are used to shelter elderly individuals who have lost their ability to work. Experts believe that this discovery not only confirms the historical evolution of Chinese folk funeral customs but also provides evidence for the widespread "transition from abandonment of the elderly to respect for the elderly" stories prevalent in Asian countries.”
