FASHION DESIGNER AT LUXURY HOUSE
Lola Belly, a 23-year-old fashion designer, hails from the quaint city of London. Described as passionate, occasionally funny, and a tad stubborn, Belly is known for her unwavering dedication and penchant for going the extra mile in her pursuits. While her upbringing may not have been steeped in the world of fashion, Bely’s journey into the realm of design began when she had to choose her A-levels. Opting for the artistic path as a means of self-expression, she soon found herself drawn to the captivating world of fashion.
Her formal education in fashion design commenced with an extended diploma at Ravensbourne University in London, where she was introduced to the intricacies of the craft. It was during this time that Belly discovered her passion for knitwear design, finding allure in the process of creating both the design and the fabric itself. Inspired by the power of textures, colors, and shapes, she delved deep into the realm of knitwear, embracing its creative possibilities with fervor.
Belly’s creative process is fueled by her fascination with themes rooted in social and political issues, often drawing from her personal or familial background for inspiration. She immerses herself in extensive research, gathering images, conducting interviews, and exploring various mediums to conceptualize her ideas. With a preference for 3D design, Belly thrives in the studio environment, where she can bring her visions to life through hands-on experimentation and collaboration. Belly currently works in Molly Godard where she is junior fashion designer.

What advice would you give to young professionals aspiring to pursue a career in the fashion industry?
What initially drew me to a career in fashion design was the opportunity to express my creativity in a tangible and practical way. I've always been fascinated by the power of clothing to tell stories, evoke emotions, and shape identity. Fashion design allows me to combine my love for art, culture, and storytelling into something that people can wear and experience in their everyday lives.
I got started in this field through a combination of curiosity, passion, and serendipity. It wasn't something I had planned from a young age, but rather something that unfolded organically as I explored different artistic and creative avenues. My decision to pursue fashion design was solidified during my studies in London, where I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the vibrant fashion scene and discover my passion for knitwear design.
As a junior fashion designer at Molly Goddard, my typical day is dynamic and filled with creativity. Each morning, I start by reviewing any ongoing projects and discussing ideas with the design team. We brainstorm concepts for upcoming collections, considering themes, color palettes, and fabric choices.
In the studio, there's always something exciting happening, whether it's fitting sessions with models, fabric swatch evaluations, or attending meetings with suppliers. I'm constantly learning and gaining valuable experience in all aspects of the design process.
Overall, my days are fast-paced and demanding, but incredibly rewarding. I love being part of a talented team and contributing to the creation of beautiful, innovative fashion pieces.
While formal education can provide a solid foundation for a career in the fashion industry, it's not the only path to success. What's most important is honing your skills, building your portfolio, and gaining practical experience through internships, apprenticeships, or freelance work. Students should be aware that the fashion industry is highly competitive, and success often requires a combination of talent, hard work, and perseverance. It's also essential to stay abreast of industry trends, technologies, and best practices and to continually seek opportunities for growth and learning.
My advice to young professionals aspiring to pursue a career in the fashion industry would be to stay curious, stay open-minded, and stay resilient. Fashion is a highly competitive and ever-evolving field, so it's essential to constantly seek inspiration, learn new skills, and adapt to changing trends and technologies. Don't be afraid to take risks, make mistakes, and learn from failure. And most importantly, stay true to your unique voice and vision as a designer.
