Do you think it’s necessary to study fashion to go into the industry?
What advice would you give to students aspiring to pursue a career in the fashion industry?
In your opinion, what are some common misconceptions young professionals may have about working in PR?
How do you balance the demands of your role with personal and professional development? Do you have any tips for maintaining work-life balance?
I work with the PR team at CHANEL in Dubai. I started as an intern, so my role was to familiarize myself with all publications and journalists in the UAE and understand the sector. As an intern, I assisted different divisions such as fashion, jewelry, and fragrances, each with its own guidelines. We organize photoshoots to promote our products, align with Paris on guidelines, and manage our own samples in the showrooms. Recently, I moved up as a coordinator, overseeing all three divisions in the UAE and coordinating with teams abroad, particularly in Europe. It's all about coordinating photoshoots and ensuring everything runs smoothly.
It's a tricky question. The luxury world is about storytelling and attention to detail, which makes it enjoyable to work in. I didn't study fashion, yet I've made it here. I studied business, and I believe a general career can also lead you into the industry. There are various roles within the house, and different degrees can suit each position, so I do not think it’s necessary to study fashion, to work in fashion.
Be patient, have a strong personality, and be courageous. It's a fast-paced industry that requires a lot of strength and being proactive. There is a lot of competition to work for luxury companies, no one will come looking for you, you are the own that need to make yourself valuable in the company and show your willingness to go the extra mile.
Not everyone is superficial in the industry. There are busy periods and extra hours, but there's also great support among colleagues. I work in a place that sells an appearance; however, we are aware that real life is not always like that.
It took me time to learn balance. Initially, I wanted to impress by taking on more than I could handle, and I was doing extra hours everysingle day. My managers were urging me to go home early, however I wanted to impress them. Now with time I have realized that you can impress your manager by working hard every day, on your hours. Extra hours are not what will set you up for success, on the contrary, they will make you hate your job. At the end of your day, you need leisure to break from the routine and get energized for the next day.
